What is preventative dentistry so important?

To keep a healthy mouth and smile, patients should see the dentist at a minimum of every 6 months to ensure they are cavity free, infection free and to prevent dental emergencies.

Why do I need X-rays?

We want to provide the best possible dental care to our patients. A visual exam doesn’t tell everything we need to know. To assure no pathology is present in the bone structure, bone integrity, integrity of existing fillings and crowns, cavity depth and locations, X-rays are a must.

Can I just get a “regular cleaning?” What is the difference in a “regular cleaning” and a “deep cleaning?”

Prophy/Regular cleaning is a non-therapeutic procedure for the maintenance of a healthy mouth. Prophy is only provided for patients without periodontitis. It is primarily a supragingival (above the gums) procedure and is completed to prevent oral disease. It is provided at six-month intervals.

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is therapeutic procedure for the treatment of a non-healthy mouth. SRPS are completed for patients with periodontitis. It is primarily a subgingival (below the gums) procedure and is completed to treat oral infection. Once the initial SRP is completed, the patient will be put on a periodontal maintenance regimen.

Periodontal maintenance is different than prophy and is most commonly utilized for patients who have had active perio treatment. It is ongoing treatment for periodontitis, which is a chronic and non-curable bacterial infection. The objective of Periodontal maintenance is to keep the disease under control. Any type of periodontal treatment is ineffective in the long term without an effect periodontal maintenance regimen. Periodontal maintenance is provided every three months.
